Help in Troubled Times

We are unsure how much impact the COVID-19 virus is going to have on our community, and on our church families. But, we are very concerned that people do not suffer alone. If you find yourself in need, then please let us know. We are especially concerned for those who might be laid off work, or who are self-quarantined and cannot get out to run simple errands.

-----

40 Days of Prayer

In preparation for General Conference for our denomination this year, our Bishop and other leaders had called our churches to a time of prayer and fasting for 40 days. With the widespread shutdown, our conference is postponed for one year, but the call to prayer remains. Two things will happen:

First, beginning on Sunday April 19th, we will daily send some devotionals and prayer points to you on behalf of the denomination by email.

Secondly, we will call our church for a specific day of prayer on Wednesday, April 29th.

We hope you will participate as churches across our country pray together in unity!

Pastor Daniel's Email Update

Written Saturday, April 4

Hello Church family!

As I prepare to record tomorrow's worship service at 1:00 today, I do so with a deep sense of privilege. I get to, once again, lead our church in communion. You should know that I do not do this lightly; and I hope you do not, either. It is true that we cannot do things as we normally would, but we can still be as serious and God honouring and connected as we possibly can. Though the service is pre-recorded, maybe you could make extra effort to watch it right at 10:30, knowing that the rest of your church family is doing the same. And, you prepare some kind of bread/crackers and juice for whoever is with you, let us treat the elements with respect even in our home environment. And then, when we partake, we will do so together, in Christ, remembering Him!

Please see the announcements below for our church's plans for this week:

Sunday, April 5

Worship service this Sunday has, again, all been pre-recorded and is being assembled together into one continuous video. This completed video will be uploaded to our YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/user/pfmchurch/videos). The video will be available by 10:30 tomorrow morning - Sunday, April 5. The video will include some worship in song (lyrics are embedded in the video), our dynamic duo of Pastor Holly and Sock Puppet Sam, some announcements, a greeting from one of our church families, and a reflection on Scripture along with communion. We hope you tune in tomorrow at 10:30; though, as a YouTube video, it will continue to be available anytime after that.

Good Friday

We learned this week that our denomination is hosting a live, online, YouTube stream of a worship service. This will be hosted by our Bishop, Rev. Dr. Cliff Fletcher, and various other denominational leaders. The service will stream live at 11:00am. Here's how to connect in...

Pastor Daniel's Email Update

Written Saturday, March 28

Hello Church family!

Once again, this has been a very full week. In church leadership meetings, sub-committees, and denominational meetings, I find myself talking a lot to my computer screen!! Actually, it really is remarkable how well the technology has worked, and how well we are served by it.

I really want to thank all the people in our church who are connecting with one another in a variety of way... this is how we will maintain a strong connection as the church together!

Please see the announcements below for our church's plans for this week:

Sunday, March 29

Worship service this Sunday has, again, all been pre-recorded and is being assembled together into one continuous video. This completed video will be uploaded to our YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/user/pfmchurch/videos). The video will be available by 10:30 tomorrow morning - Sunday, March 29. The video will include some worship in song (lyrics are embedded in the video), some announcements, a reflection on Scripture, a great idea from one of our church families, and a visit by Pastor Holly and her new friend! A Call to Calling

Our church leaders are appealing to our whole congregation to be calling one another. Phone calls, emails, Facebook, text, snail-mail... whatever works for you! Because we will not be able to connect in person on Sunday mornings, we think it is appropriate for our church to be reaching out to one another in this way. So, if you get calls from people in our church, please accept them as a friendly hello, and do the same for someone else! A friendly contact is what we need in times of uncertainty.

-----

Small Groups

Our small groups are looking at ways to stay connected with one another. There are no official announcements this week, but we will have plans in place to announce by next week.

-----

Facebook Connection for Families

Pastor Holly has created a Facebook Group for families with kids; please look us up on Facebook, or contact Pastor Holly if you are having trouble connecting in!

-----

Help in Troubled Times

We are unsure how much impact the COVID-19 virus is going to have on our community, and on our church families. But, we are very concerned that people do not suffer alone. -----

Giving Tithes & Offerings: Please email office@ptbofmc.ca for more information

We are grateful that our church family wants to support the work of PFMC; so we have put some thought into how to help with this process. Here are ways to give now, and some other options we are exploring...

  1. By Cheque.
    1. The best way to donate by cheque is to mail it to the church office (please do not send cash in the mail).

By Credit Card.

Many people use a credit card as a financial tool. Our comparative research has shown that the service called Tithe.Ly ...their name is their website (https://get.tithe.ly/)... is the best on-line credit card giving service. It has the lowest administrative fee, and the greatest flexibility for our church. Once you go to their WebSite and create an account, they will allow you to attach a credit card to the account and then find our church in their database.

Thank-You for all the ways in which you serve our church; including, with your finances!

Blessings all, and thank-you for being a wonderfully responsive church amidst all this change!

-Pastor Daniel.

Pastor Daniel's Email Update

 Written Saturday, March 21

Hello Church family!

Well, this has been a week of response and flexibility. Let me please say a great thank-you to our church leaders. Official Board members, Ministry Team Leaders, and our staff. These folks have met by teleconference several times through this past week in order to figure out how to move our church forward in a very quickly changing world.

Of course, church life will be changed dramatically because of the closure of public spaces and the advice of 'Social Distancing'. With that in mind, here are some things you need to know by way of announcements:

Sunday, March 22

Worship service this Sunday has all been pre-recorded and is being assembled together into one continuous video. This completed video will be uploaded to our YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/user/pfmchurch/videos). The video will be available by 10:30 tomorrow morning - Sunday, March 22. The video will include some worship in song (lyrics are attached to the end of this email if you'd like to sing along!), an update on our church's response to COVID-19, a reflection on Scripture, a greeting from a special church family, and something for the kids! We hope you tune in tomorrow at 10:30; though, as a YouTube video, it will continue to be available anytime after that.

Giving Tithes & Offerings

We know that our church family wants to continue to support the work of building God's Kingdom through Peterborough Free Methodist Church; so we have put some thought into how to help with this process. While we are going to do a little more research into the best ideas, here are 2 options which are secure and trustworthy right now:

  1. Mail in a cheque (please do not send cash in the mail). Cheques will be processed by our team of tellers.
  2. Online. Our online giving option is through a service called Tithe.Ly ...their name is their website (https://get.tithe.ly/). This is the service which was recommended by our denominational leaders, and has many benefits of convenience and low administrative fees. Once you go to their WebSite and create an account, they will allow you to attach a credit card to the account and then find our church in their database.

Thank-You for all the ways in which you serve our church; including, with your finances!

One with God the Lord Most High
Your hidden glory in creation
Now revealed in You our Christ

What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a beautiful Name it is

The veil tore before You
You silence the boast of sin and grave
The heavens are roaring
The praise of Your glory
For You are raised to life again

You have no equal
Now and forever God You reign
Yours is the kingdom
Yours is the glory

SONG 3

Good Good Father

Of what they think You're like
But I've heard the tender whisper
Of love in the dead of night
You tell me that You're pleased
And that I'm never alone

You're a Good Good Father
It's who You are
It's who You are
It's who You are
And I'm loved by You
It's who I am
It's who I am

I've seen many searching for answers
Far and wide
But I know we're all searching for answers
Only You provide
Because You know just what we need
Before we say a word

Chorus

You're a Good Good Father
It's who You are
It's who You are
It's who You are
And I'm loved by You
It's who I am
It's who I am
It's who I am

You are perfect in all of Your ways
You are perfect in all of Your ways
You are perfect in all of Your ways to us

Love so undeniable I can hardly speak
Peace so unexplainable I can hardly think
As You call me deeper still
As You call me deeper still
As You call me deeper still
Into love love love

Chorus x 2

You're a Good Good Father
It's who You are
It's who You are
It's who You are
And I'm loved by You
It's who I am
It's who I am
It's who I am

SONG 4

Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)

Verse 1

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep my faith will stand

Chorus 1

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Your grace abounds in deepest waters
Your sov'reign hand will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You've never failed and You won't start now

Chorus 1

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Bridge

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Saviour

Chorus 2

I will call upon Your name
Keep my eyes above the waves
My soul will rest in Your embrace
I am Yours and You are mine; I am Yours and You are mine; I am Yours and You are mine

Letter from the Bishop, Free Methodist Church In Canada

Letter from Pastor Daniel Graham

Peterborough Free Methodist Church

Our Church’s Response to the COVID-19 Situation

Results of a meeting of our church leadership on Tuesday, March 17, 2020

Greetings Church Family!

I want to say, again, a big thank-you to Dr. Elizabeth Morrison for giving us such good and wise input regarding the COVID-19 situation in our world.  She expressed both urgency and hope as she explained how everyone in our country needs to work at avoiding the spread of this virus so that we do not see the kinds of pressure on our health care system that would otherwise happen.  With these truths understood, then, what is a wise response from our church?

On the evening of Tuesday, March 17, the leadership teams of our Church met together to discuss what to do in this COVID-19 environment.  We made decisions that were difficult, yet obvious.  Included in this meeting were our Staff, our Official Board, and our Ministry Team leaders.  You should know that these 16 people served you well in discerning steps forward!

At the outset, we acknowledge that there are wise authorities over us who need to be listened to… especially two.  First, our government has advised that people not meet in groups of more than 50 people.  Secondly, our Bishop of the Free Methodist Church in Canada has advised that all of our churches cancel worship services for at least the next 3 Sundays, beginning on March 22nd.  You can see a copy of our bishop’s statement on our website (http://www.ptbofmc.ca/index.php).

With this advice, and with some discussion last night, our leadership teams came up with these unanimous decisions regarding our church life…

  1. We will cancel all in-person Sunday morning services at the Church.  For how long?  It’s hard to say, but we will watch closely the decision of the publicly-funded schools in their time of closure.
  2. We will cancel all in-person mid-week gatherings at the church.
  3. We will cancel all in-person small groups in homes or at other places.
  4. Our hospital visitation team will not make any more in-person visits to the hospital.  The only exception is Pastor Daniel, as long as clergy are still permitted to visit, and as long as he feels personally safe and that it is responsible to do so.
  5. Our shut-in visitation team will no longer make in-person visits to nursing homes or to people’s houses.
  6. All appointments with church office staff are to be conducted by telephone instead of in-person.  The office is only to be used for necessary office administrative tasks.
  7. Staff are free to work from home as needed.
  8. All user groups of the church are to cancel their meetings in our church.
  9. The cleaning company will still do their work, but now with a focus on sterilizing surfaces.
  10. We will cancel our involvement with the Good Friday service.
  11. Tellers will need to obey governmental safety guidelines in working together – ie., appropriate distances, wearing gloves, etc.
  12. All in-person ‘Connecting Team’ events will be put on hold for now (movie night, greet the Pastor, Gathering Gals, etc.)

So, if we are NOT doing all those things, what ARE we doing?

Well, this will take more creative discernment and prayer than we had time for last night.  What we HAVE done is to think about 4 areas of ministry which need to keep driving forward, and we have created teams to think about these areas.

Our 4 Ministry Areas of Focus (each has a team to consider these issues):

  1. Care for the Hurting:  In an era of social-distancing, how do we still care for our church family who are in the hospital, shut-in, those who are in fear, and those who are maybe experiencing financial crisis?
  2. Sense of Church Family Together:  When so many in-person events must be cancelled, how do we still maintain a sense of togetherness as a group?  Are there ways to use the telephone and teleconferencing to still vitally be the family of Peterborough Free Methodist Church together?
  3. Worship/Teaching:  If we cannot gather, what do we do on Sunday?  Can we LiveStream or pre-record within our sanctuary space in a way that is meaningful to those watching online?  What is a good solution for a number of weeks?
  4. Caring for our Community:  Many people, outside of our church, will be facing fear and hardship in their lives.  Are there ways to bring the hope and reassurance of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and His mercies, through our church to the neighbourhoods around us?

Church, these are the times we must be creative.  It is obvious, and wise, and prudent to cancel the things we have cancelled.  However, the mission of Jesus Christ in our world does not pause because we are distracted.  ‘How do we minister the Gospel of Jesus into these present days?’ is a question the church has always sought to answer.  With the Lord being our helper, we will do this!

If you have any follow-up questions, please feel free to contact myself (pastordaniel@ptbofmc.ca), or Pastor Holly (hollyraymond@ptbofmc.ca), or Erin (office@ptbofmc.ca) our office administrator.  Or, call the office at 705-745-7585.  You can also check for regular updates on our Web Page or follow us on Facebook.

Praying God’s protection and blessings for you, your family, our church family, and our community!

-Pastor Daniel.

2020-03-14

Written Saturday, March 14

I just want to let you know about our plans for tomorrow's worship service. I am going to modify the service a bit to include these elements:

  • An interview with Dr. Elizabeth Morrison. Liz is a doctor here in Peterborough, and our church is blessed to have her as part of our congregation. She has been a helpful resource to the Board as we have been processing a response to the Coronavirus pandemic. Liz has agreed to allow me to interview her so that we can better understand what is going on in our world.
  • A time of worship in music, and a focus on prayer for our global situation.
  • An update on our church's response - I am calling the Board, Ministry Team Leaders, and staff together to a meeting on Tuesday evening of this week. They will discern next steps, and whether or not we have to cancel Sunday services and other gatherings; and if so, for how long? We will send out an email report on Wednesday.
  • A shortened service together.
  • All hand sanitizers have been checked and filled.

So, this is what you can expect from our service tomorrow.

Of course, we need to ask that you please stay home if you are showing symptoms like that of a cold or the flu, OR, if you have recently travelled outside of Canada. This is now common-knowledge best practice.

Also, I will entirely understand if you simply decide to stay away from coming to church this Sunday.

Still, I really do hope to see you there!

-Pastor Daniel

2020-03-12/13

Written Thursday, March 12, 2020... updated Friday, March 13

I have been in conversation with the Board of Peterborough Free Methodist Church, and a few resource people from the medical and emergency response fields, and I want to let you know our church leadership's current thinking on the issue of the Coronavirus.

This past week, the World Health Organization has called the Coronavirus a 'Pandemic', which means that it is spreading across the whole world. The news is full of responses. Italy has quarantined its entire country. The United States has closed its borders, at least in part, to China and to Continental Europe. The Grammys have been cancelled. The NHL has suspended its season. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is quarantined because his wife returned from an overseas speaking engagement with the virus. And, the Ontario school district has cancelled school for the 2 weeks after March break is over.

What should we do as a church?

Get the Facts

I looked at the web page for Health Canada https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada.html   Links to information about Coronavirus were obvious and easy to follow. It really was helpful to get facts. Here's what I learned...

  1. "At this time, Health Canada has assessed the public health risk associated with COVID-19 as low for the general population in Canada but this could change rapidly"
  2. There is an increased risk of more severe outcomes for Canadians who: are aged 65 and over, have compromised immune systems, or have underlying medical conditions.
  3. The Coronavirus is new, therefore the human population has no built-up immunity to it. That is why the virus can spread almost unhindered.
  4. The Coronavirus is contagious before symptoms show; therefore, it can be being spread without the infected person even knowing yet that they are ill.

I have also looked at the web page for the Peterborough Regional Health Centre: https://www.prhc.on.ca/articles/   To find relevant information, you need to view the most recent news article on the virus. The current article, as of Wed., March 11 at 4:46pm, the statement is: "Currently, Peterborough has no confirmed or presumptive cases of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus)." HOWEVERkawarthanow.com is reporting the first positive case in the Kawartha region (as of Friday).

Should Our Church Cancel Meetings?

As of right now, Friday, March 13 at 9:00pm, it is our leadership's decision that we proceed with our worship service this Sunday, March 15. We will closely monitor the advice of Health Canada and the Peterborough Health District to determine the cancellation of other meetings. We will give you an update on Sunday.

Precautions

  1. If you feel it unsafe to meet together with your church family, then please stay home. You need to do what is right for you.
  2. If you are feeling symptoms like those of a cold or flu, then please keep yourself at home so that you do not spread anything to others (most of us do this anyway when we have colds and flus!... but, it is especially advised now). Also, seek proper medical attention for yourself!... there is good advice about how to do that on the Peterborough Health District website.
  3. Let us avoid shaking hands to greet one another, and make sure we are using hand sanitizer properly when we do meet.

In Conclusion

As a church family, we are ready to do whatever is necessary to keep ourselves and our community safe. In order to properly monitor the situation, put contingencies in place, and make quick decisions as necessary, I am going to cancel my March Break vacation week. Things can develop quickly, and I want us to be able to respond to proper governmental regulations and advice. Please know that we will keep you posted on this important topic.

Blessings all,

-Pastor Daniel.
